Objectives and Challenges
The objective of the assistance measure is to contribute to strengthening the capacities of the Egyptian Armed Forces in order to enhance national security and the stability of the Arab Republic of Egypt, as well as to better protect civilians. It aims to contribute to peace and security in the region.
To achieve this objective, the assistance measure funds the following types of equipment, which are not designed to deliver lethal force:
- Light armored patrol vehicles;
- Small unmanned aerial vehicle systems;
- Light, mobile radar systems;
- Goggles with night vision features.
The assistance measure also funds related supplies and services, including technical training, if necessary
Project Overview
On 17 March 2024, the EU and Egypt signed a Joint Declaration on a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, consisting of a set of short- and medium-term commitments based on six key pillars, with security and defense being one of the pillars of the EU’s multifaceted partnership.
On 19 July 2024, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy received a request from the Arab Republic of Egypt calling on the Union to enhance the capabilities of the Egyptian Armed Forces.
The adoption of this assistance measure is part of the deepening security and defense cooperation between the EU and Egypt.
It is intended to enable the Egyptian Armed Forces to strengthen their territorial control capabilities and to better respond to security threats across the Egyptian territory, particularly in the western region.
It also aims to support the establishment of a strategic reserve unit in Egypt, whose mission will be to support deployed units.
