Action in Support of the Multinational Joint Task Force

Action in Support of the Multinational Joint Task Force under an Assistance Measure in the Form of a General Support Programme to the African Union within the Framework of the European Peace Facility for the Period 2022–2024

Objectives and Challenges

The objective of this action is to strengthen the capabilities of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), whose mandate is to restore a safe and secure environment for the populations of the Lake Chad Basin through enhanced regional cooperation.

To achieve this objective, the action/programme finances the following non-lethal equipment and services:

• Provision of an ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) service;
• Provision of detection, surveillance and telecommunications equipment;
• Provision of drone systems;
• Rehabilitation of critical infrastructure;
• Provision of marine fuel.

The action is complemented by the technical and operational training required to ensure that the beneficiary is equipped with a fully operational capability.

Project overview

This Action is part of a broader programme supporting the African Union (AU) for the period 2022–2024 – Council Decision (CFSP) 2022/667

The programme’s overall objectives are to reduce the incidence, duration, and intensity of violent conflicts in Africa and to strengthen the role of the AU in promoting peace and security across the African continent.

Its specific objective is to enhance conflict management capacities for the deployment of military components of peace support operations led by the African Union Commission (AUC) and African regional organizations.

On 18 January 2023, the Political and Security Committee (PSC) approved a recommendation by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy concerning an action in support of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), to be financed under the assistance measure constituting part of the general AU support programme within the framework of the European Peace Facility (EPF).
