SUPPLY OF NAUTICAL MEANS, DETECTION AND SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS, DRONES, ISR SYSTEM AND FACILITIES

OBJECTIVES AND CHALLENGES

The objective of the action is to strengthen the capabilities of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) whose role is to restore a safe and secure environment in the Lake Chad basin areas, through enhanced regional cooperation.

To achieve this objective, the action/ programme finances the following non-lethal equipment and service:

– development and construction of security and protection facilities;

– supply of nautical means for logistics purposes;

– supply of nautical fuel;

– supply of detection and surveillance systems;

– supply of drone systems;

– supply of an ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) system.

It includes technical and operational training to provide the beneficiary with a complete capability.

Presentation of the project

This action is part of a general support programme for the African Union (AU) for the years 2022-2024.

The general objectives of this programme are to reduce the incidence, duration and intensity of violent conflicts in Africa and strengthen the role of AU with regard to peace and security on the African continent.

The specific objective is to enhance conflict management for the deployment of the military components for peace support operations led by the EU Commission and African regional organisations.

On 18 January 2023, the Political and Security Committee has approved a recommendation by the high representative of the Union for foreign affairs and security policy for an action in support of the MNJTF to be financed under the assistance measure taking the form of a general programme for support to the AU under the EPF.
